Ad Intelligence

Ad intelligence is the analysis of competitors' paid advertising — the creative, the claims, the audiences and how long each campaign survives.

What it means

Advertising is the one place a company pays to be explicit. Ad libraries on the major platforms make live and recent creative publicly inspectable, which means a rival's current message, offer and target audience can be read directly rather than inferred.

The unit of analysis is the campaign rather than the individual advert. A single creative tells you little; twenty creatives running simultaneously with one shared claim tells you what the company has decided to bet on this quarter.

Longevity is the strongest signal

Advertisers kill what does not work. An advert that has been running continuously for months has almost certainly earned its place, and an advert that appeared and vanished within a fortnight almost certainly did not. Duration is therefore a rough but honest proxy for performance — one of the few you can read from outside a competitor's analytics.

The same logic applies to volume shifts. A rival that suddenly multiplies its creative count is testing; one that narrows to a handful of long-running adverts has finished testing and found an answer.

What to read in the creative

Three things repay close reading. The claim a rival leads with in paid media is the one they have decided is most persuasive to a cold audience, which is often narrower and blunter than anything on their website. The audience they target — job title, industry, company size — states who they think the buyer is. And whether they name a competitor tells you how the category is being contested.

When a competitor starts running adverts against your brand name, that is a direct statement of intent, and it usually arrives alongside a battlecard about you that you will never see.

What it cannot tell you

Ad libraries show creative and, on some platforms, rough reach and audience parameters. They do not show spend, cost per acquisition or conversion. Any confident statement about a competitor's advertising budget derived from an ad library is an estimate wearing a number's clothing.

Read it for message and commitment, not for money. What a rival says to a cold audience, and how long they keep saying it, is the durable insight.

Coverage is also uneven by platform and by region. Absence from a library is not proof a competitor is not advertising there, only that it is not visible under the terms you searched. Treat it as a floor on their activity rather than a complete picture.

How IndustryLens handles this

IndustryLens tracks 65,000+ competitor ads across Meta, Google and LinkedIn, so a rival's live creative, its claims and how long each has been running are all part of the same competitive record.
